The Tanzhe monastery, built 1500 years ago (built even before the city of Beijing) when Buddhism was first introduced into Beijing, is surrounded by mountains clad with towering ancient trees and dotted by age-old temples with 75 Buddha towers strewn on the southern mountain slope. It is both grand in design and atmosphere, similar to many of the other imperial temples in Beijing. The temple is an active place of Buddhist worship, with ceremonies on the first day and the 15th day of each lunar month.

Pagoda Forest
The largest pagoda area, gathering various style of pagoda (total 73) with famous monks' relics from Jin, Yuan to Ming and Qing Dynasties.

A nearby old village, lies in the mountains behind Tanzhe temple, is a quiet abandoned village. Not many villagers can be seen here except some sheep suddenly jump out from the bush. The houses are empty and broken because of shortage of water resource and overexploitation of coal mining industry.
